No problem with 2009 here... January 5, 2009 Richard J. Martin 118 out of 133 found this review helpful
I have used Quicken for about 15 years. My most recent version was Quicken 2006. Since they do not support Quicken for more than three years I was forced to buy 2009. Given the bad reviews I was expecting the worst. That conern was not supported by the flawless installation of 2009 I experienced on my PC. Everything went perfectly including the update to version 3.0. I'm not sure why some many poeple had issues. My Quicken data base is very large including banking and investment transactions, etc. I would highly recommend this product however I find it hard to accept Intuit's policy requiring updates every 3 years. 2009 is essentially a cosmetic rework of 2006, nothing significant in terms of new features and functionality. Just a way to provide Intuit with a revenue stream....

First let me say that I do believe that every new version of any program is going to have issues. I've never used a totally bug free program with a new released version.
Second, I've used the 2009 versions of Quicken for months and I've not seen the problem some have complained about here. All my accounts have always updated properly, on all my computers ( two desktops and three laptops). It can be true that some banks take time to update their systems to be compatible with newer versions of accounting programs. That is not just Quicken, but all the programs. If you check with any accounting agency they will all tell you they recommend Quicken over the others and to update to stay current.
Third, I have NEVER, in nearly 20 years, EVER lost a file in Quicken. The only possible way to lose a file or have a corrupted file is to NOT backup as the program tells you to every time you close it. I can still use files from the 1980s, converted, updated and original files in old, saved versions of the program.
I've used Quicken since the late 80s. I've tried MS Money, as well as other small accounting programs, but I always come back to Quicken. Though there are small things I do not like about Quicken (all the commercial stuff that gets offered) over all, I really think it is the best personal accounting system on the market.
It is extremely easy to use. It looks just like a check book register, so there's nothing to using it to keep track of basic spending.
It's also easy to set up categories and sub categories (like UTILITIES:SoCalGAS, UTILITIES:DWP) for your transactions so you can put everything into spending groups, for taxes or specialized reports, or just to be able to print out the payments to a particular payee or category like "INSURANCE:Health".
Once you put in your credit card accounts, Quicken will be able to download every transaction for you, and put it right where it belongs.
Those are just some of the very basic things Quicken can do. At years end, you can see exactly what you spent and where.
But the things I love the best... you can attach PDF notes or scanned documents to each transaction. I download most of my bills now a days, utilities and credit card statements, and I when I make a payment, I click the attachment like and attach my statement and the online receipt I got when I authorized a payment. On CDs or other bank accounts, I click the interest transaction and attach the statements that to with that account. I attach all my utility bills to the payment transactions and receipts for items with warranties, so I always have them with the click of a button. I can run reports and print them in PDF format, so I can email a payee with all the information about monies I've paid to clear up any disputes Or I can export all transaction to a payee to excel. The new interface is more customizable than previous version, making it easier to set up the way you like to work.
You can pay bills in Quicken, or do anything any of the others do, but I think Quicken is easier to learn and more reliable.
I know that other accounting programs offer many of the same features, but over the years I've NEVER lost a file in Quicken. I've never had a problem upgrading a file or running reports on files that go back as far as 1988.
Glad I upgraded - taking you through my decision process January 17, 2009 G. Teamann (PA, USA) 16 out of 21 found this review helpful
I, like others had an expiring version of Quicken which I had to upgrade if I wanted to continue to download my transactions automatically - the most convenient feature in the program - so upgrading was really not a decision, more so a requirement. Yeah, I've gotten three years of use out of my $30 investment made in 2006 which has saved me countless hours of time, and virtually eliminated mistakes made with my personal financial tracking, how can I complain that I have to pony up another small fee to continue to use this great software.
But wait, I come to Amazon and see the many poor reviews and horror stories - now this is a decision - I just want software that works, which Quicken has always met this requirement for me more so than any other personal finance software.
Seeing these reviews pushed me in the direction of reluctantly evaluating online services. Even though the convenience of not having software to install and maintain and being able to access your information from any computer is nice, I have serious concerns about storing all of my financial info online. While evaluating these services, it was apparent that there was nothing out there that combined the main features I use in Quicken - banking, bill processing and investment tracking - all in one place.
While walking through a retail store, I saw Quicken 09 on display and noticed something on the box that put my mind at ease when deciding to purchase. Intuit offers a 60 day money back guarantee for the software if you are not satisfied, so I figured I had nothing to lose.
I purchased and have been using Q09 for a few weeks now, and am happy to report everything has been working smoothly. No issues with the install, database upgrade, transaction downloads, or operation of the software. They are currently on release 4 of the software, so maybe the updates helped resolve some of the issues others have encountered in the past - be sure to update immediately after the initial install. For me it has been the same great Quicken, but with more features, better reports, and a cleaner interface. I really happy I decided to make another minuscule investment to continue to use this great software for another few years.
Another "no problem" installation March 14, 2009 Taxguyla (Los Angeles, CA USA) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
I too, have also been a Quicken user for many years. My file contains my checking account since 1994. I was another 2006 version user forced to change to 2009 version due to the online services being terminated next month. I was hesitant due to the plethora of bad reviews, but converting to another product from Quicken was an even scarier thought for me. I was encouraged that the majority of bad reviews seemed to be pre-1/1/09 and more recent reviews seemed to be getting better. So, I marched forward with 2009. Buying any new version of software when it first becomes available is asking for trouble in my book. Granted, that shouldnt be true, but then again, life aint always fair, is it?
I downloaded the Q2009 (Deluxe) version. It installed flawlessly (I use WinXP Pro). I opened up my file and everything was there. I tried an online update of my credit cards and BOOM, it downloaded like nothing had changed. Yea!! :-) This was probably my biggest worry was that I'd have to re-set all my online info. However, Quicken came through like a champ! I've had no problems with the size of my file like some people have reported. I have noticed absolutely no slowness with Q2009. The only "fixes" I've had to do were a few cosmetic preferences on how I prefer my Quicken register to look (I wanted it laid out just like my old friend, Q2006). That only took a few minutes once I figured out where to do this.
Admittedly, I was a little irked I was being forced to upgrade. If it aint broke, dont fix it... thats my motto. However, I cant begrudge Intuit wanting some cash every three years. Lets be real, less than $15 a year is still pretty darn reasonable for this software. They need to make a buck too. If all of their upgrades would work this flawlessly, I would be perfectly fine with their forced upgrades. However, if they had given me the option to extend my 2006 version for another 3 years for the same cost, I probably would have stuck with Q2006. Maybe all the problems relate to Vista users, I dont know, not everyone volunteers their operating system type. But so far, Q2009 gets a big thumbs up with Win XP Pro!
Poor reviews here not substantiated by my experience February 11, 2009 Chris (West Bloomfield, MI USA) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have used Quicken since the DOS days back in 1988. I have a 20 MB Quicken data file covering my transactions from the beginning. Quicken 2006 had been doing everything I wanted, but the impending loss of on-line downloading had forced me to upgrade, albiet somewhat reluctantly after reading the reviews here.
I am running a Socket 939 AMD system with Windows XP SP3. Before I installed the 2009 version, I validated and "supervalidated" my Quicken 2006 data file (search Google for the Intuit forums to describe how to do this.) I then installed the 2009 version, let it look for updates, and it installed to 2009 Deluxe Release R 4. It then asked to convert my 2006 file, which of I allowed. Quicken then opened. No errors or problems with the initial install Overall, there are some cosmetic differences, but everything else appeared there. There are some tabs to the right of the screen that seemed more like ads for other things, but you can close them and they stay closed. I tried an on-line update: two credit cards did just fine (but one downloaded 186 transactions that I already had so I had to delete them all.) Subsequent credit card downloads have run without problems. Three of my four Mutual Fund Families (Vanguard and 2 different Fidelity registrations) downloaded just fine - my 2 Columbia Funds would not. After a phone call to the number that Quicken provided on-screen, Columbia told me I needed to use my SS number as an User ID, and subsequent downloads have worked. Mutual fund and Stock Quote prices update without problems, my reports work fine, and everything is back to normal. Responding to memory usage comments: qw.exe runs my 20 Mb file on 62 Mb of RAM. The account list is not as easy to edit as it was before - a minor point since I don't edit them very often. I can't comment on BillPay or Intuit phone support - don't use them. Files open and close quickly - none of the reported slowness that was reported here. Overall, a pretty typical upgrade and I'm still happy with this software. Maybe I'm happy because I'm working with Release 4 - but I usually wait several months after software is released to install it.
